How to make Khan Academy style videos with AI

November 1, 2026 · 3 min read

Khan Academy made one lesson style famous. A dark screen, coloured handwriting, and a calm voice working through one problem. There is no face on screen and no slide deck. Students watch the solution being built in the same order it is explained.

Kinoslide is not affiliated with Khan Academy. This guide uses the name only to describe the style.

Why the style works

  • One problem or one idea per video, so the student knows what they are there to learn.
  • Each step appears as the voice reaches it, so the eye and the ear stay on the same thing.
  • Earlier steps stay on the board, so the student can look back at where a term came from.
  • The voice sounds like a person thinking out loud, with pauses where the student needs a moment.

The traditional way to make one

The usual setup is a drawing tablet, a screen recorder, a microphone, and a quiet room. You solve the problem live while recording. A mistake halfway through means starting again or cutting the recording. Each video takes a full session, and a series takes weeks.

Making one with AI

Kinoslide does the drawing and the narration. Its Blackboard style writes in chalk on a dark slate, which is the closest match to the classic look. Dry Erase does the same in marker on a white board.

  • Type the problem and who it is for, or upload a worksheet or notes as a PDF.
  • Pick Blackboard or Dry Erase.
  • Pick the length. One worked example usually fits in one to three minutes.
  • Generate. Kinoslide writes the narration and plans what appears on the board, timed to the voice.
  • Watch it and check the working. On Pro and Scale you can fix any line in the storyboard before it renders.
  • Download the MP4 for your class, your LMS, or your channel.

What is different from a recorded lesson

The voice is an AI voice. On Pro and Scale you choose it from the voice library. If you want control over every word, paste your own script and choose Narrate word for word. Kinoslide reads it as written and draws to match.

The handwriting is neat and the same every time. Students never have to decode a rushed scrawl.

The board can also move, which a recorded tablet lesson cannot easily do. Terms slide across the equals sign, a shape gets cut and rearranged, a graph traces out. For many topics that motion is the explanation.

Start with one problem

Pick the problem your students ask about most and make one video. If it helps, make the next one in the series. The math lesson videos page shows finished examples in each style.

Common questions

Is there an AI that makes Khan Academy style videos?

Yes. Kinoslide's Blackboard and Dry Erase styles write each step on a board as an AI voice explains it. You start from a topic, a worked example, or your notes as a PDF.

Can I upload handwritten notes?

Yes. Scan them to a PDF and upload it. Kinoslide reads scanned pages and writes the lesson from them.

How long should each video be?

One problem or one idea per video. A single worked example usually fits in one to three minutes.

Is Kinoslide affiliated with Khan Academy?

No. Kinoslide is an independent product. Khan Academy is named here only to describe a familiar lesson style.
